Treatment for prostate
cancer may include hormone therapy, chemotherapy, radiotherapy or surgery. Men from teenagers to 45 years of age need to examine their testicles each month, preferably after a bath or shower, to feel for any pea-sized lumps that could indicate testicular cancer. Men over the age of 50 should go for a simple screening test (PSA test) each year to check if they have prostate cancer, which is the most common cancer among men in South Africa and globally. CANCER ASSOCIATION
OF SOUTH AFRICA
CANSA is an NPO (Non-Profit Organisation) that receives minimal State funding
and relies on donors, sponsors and its
own national and local fundraising initiatives to fund its work in all communities
of South Africa. One such national
initiative is Cuppa for CANSA that has become an institution since its inception
10 years ago. It's an easy, sociable way to
raise awareness about cancer and encourage guests to make a donation towards
the fight against cancer.
As part of its 75th anniversary activities, CANSA is hosting a larger than ever
Cuppa event in 2006. We are planning to
. As in the past, we are relying on those who have participated in this worthy
fundraiser before to organise as
many get-togethers as possible and encourage others to do the same. All proceeds
will be used for prevention
programmes and patient services in the areas where the money is raised.
As the host or hostess it's up to you to create a great Cuppa occasion. Your
Cuppa get-together can be as large or small as
you like. Be creative. There are no limits. Let your imagination run wild! Invite
family, friends, neighbours and colleagues
to come for a “Cuppa” and ask each guest to make as generous a donation
as possible. Make your Cuppa event part of a
larger event such as a PTA meeting; a kitchen tea; a baby shower; at the tuck
shop; or a sporting event. Serve tea, coffee,
soup, hot chocolate, freshly squeezed fruit juice, sparkling water or whatever
you fancy. Encourage each guest to bring
along a friend and a plate of their favourite treats, or ask your local bakery
or supermarket to sponsor eats. Invite a local
celebrity to attend and speak on an interesting topic and be sure to challenge
your spouse or boss to match or better the
amount that you raise at your Cuppa event.
To make sure your Cuppa get-together is well attended and as enjoyable as can
be, we have supplied you with a colourful
poster that you can complete with your own details and display prominently at
work, on community or sports club notice
boards or your place of worship; healthy Rooibos teabags kindly donated by Freshpak;
handy information leaflets
sponsored by Shoprite Checkers and a guest register that you can use to total
up your donations at the end of your
“Cuppa” before banking it.
To encourage hosts and hostesses to by hosting the most profitable Cuppa event,
CANSA is offering
wonderful prizes to the top three Cuppa fundraisers overall, as well as an individual
prize for each person who raises the
most money in each province.
The 1st prize is one year's free household and motor insurance to the value
of R18 000 sponsored by Diagonal Insurance
Solutions; the 2nd prize is a set of sea pearl earrings by leading jewellery
designer Jenna Clifford valued at R1 400;
the 3rd prize is a Shoprite Checkers shopping voucher for R1 000. Provincial
winners will each receive a designer sugar
spoon valued at R450 sponsored by Jenna Clifford.
