How lucky we are, as proud South Africans, to be able to celebrate the birthday of one of the world’s greatest peoples’ person and undoubtedly a legend in his own lifetime, our very own Madiba! To Mr. Mandela, we say “May your birthday be a happy day filled with love, appreciation and a simple thank you because you, Sir, have done more than just your duty to South Africa, all its people and to the world at large. May the effects of all your achievements and contributions be acknowledged and enjoyed by all, for the decades that follow this day. God bless you”.

The national working committee of the African National Congress (ANC) also sent Mandela its best wishes. “As we mark the achievement of this milestone in your life, we celebrate together the extraordinary contribution that you have made and continue to make to the realisation of the goal of a better life for all our people,” it said.

Democratic Alliance leader Tony Leon hailed Mandela as SA’s “greatest living statesman”, saying he continued to inspire and enthral.
