| Gauteng
is the smallest of South Africa’s nine provinces, measuring 18 810
square kilometers. Its three main cities are Johannesburg, Soweto and Tshwane (Pretoria). The population of Gauteng is about 8,8 Million (about 20% of nation total) with about 51% male The province has a multi-cultural population comprising African (70%), white (23%), coloured (4%) and Indian/Asian (2%). Languages spoken are English, Afrikaans, Sesotho, Sepedi, Setswana and Zulu. |
Soweto is the most populous black urban residential area in the country, with Census 2001 putting its population at close to a million. Thanks to its proximity to Johannesburg, the economic hub of the country, it is also the most metropolitan township in the country - setting trends in politics, fashion, music, dance and language. |
