Eastern Cape government has set aside R100 million towards the expansion
of Primary Health Care in the province.Delivering his policy speech for
the next financial year here on Friday, Health MEC Bevan Goqwana said
the money would be channelled towards a "home grown model" of
turning a clinic into a centre of excellence. |

of more malaria infection as the holidays is looming.Bongani Mzolo, assistant
director of communications in the Department of Health, said, "The
most cases are from people who have traveled to other provinces and get
infected," adding, "We are concerned about the large amount
of traveling that will take place over the next few weeks." |

| The Education Department in KwaZulu-Natal has
stopped paying salaries to teachers who stay at home for more than three
months claiming to be sick, resulting in substitute teachers being brought
in at a high cost to taxpayers.This is one of a number of steps taken
by the department to contain over-expenditure and to set the department
on a sound footing.But tight financial controls were implemented last
year, resulting in a decrease in projected over-expenditure to R231 million
compared to previous over-expenditure of almost R1 billion. |

| Government's drive to accelerate the provision
of water and electricity has been given a boost in Limpopo, with the province
setting aside millions of rands for related programmes.The predominantly
rural province is now geared towards accelerated service delivery after
Local Government and Housing MEC Maite Nkoana-Mashabane announced massive
projects. Tabling her budget speech, Ms Nkoana-Mashabane said that R18-million
would be spent on water reticulation at the Capricorn District Municipality |

foetal alcohol spectrum disorder in the world and prevalence in the Southern
Cape is reaching alarming proportions.Between 75 and 100 children out
of every 1 000 children in the Western Cape are born with the birth defect,
caused by alcohol consumption during pregnancy, meaning that the figure
could be as high as one in every 10 babies in some communities. |
